Logging in and keeping your account safe

Passwords, two-factor login, staying signed in, and what to do if you're locked out.

About 5 minutes to read

Logging in

  1. 1Open the login page.
  2. 2In the first box, type either your email address or your username — both work.
  3. 3Type your password and tap Log in.
Log in wrong too many times in a row and you will see "Too many requests. Please try again later." Nothing is broken and your account is not locked — wait a minute and try again.

Change your username

Your username is the @handle in your profile address. You can change it, but not often — every link anyone has saved to your old profile stops working the moment you do.

  1. 1Go to Settings.
  2. 2In the Account section, find Change your username.
  3. 3Type the one you want and tap Change.
Length
3 to 20 characters
Allowed characters
Letters, numbers and underscore ( _ ). No spaces, dots or symbols.
Capital letters
Usernames are stored in lower case, so Dineth and dineth are the same handle.
How often
Once every 30 days
Taken names
If somebody already has it, you will be told and nothing changes.
Reserved names
A short list — admin, support, help and similar — cannot be used.
Old links
Stop working immediately. Nobody else can take your old username straight away, but do not count on getting it back.

Two-factor login

Two-factor login means that after your password we also send you a 6-digit code. Even if somebody learns your password, they cannot get in without your email or phone.

Turn it on

  1. 1Go to Settings, then Login & security.
  2. 2Choose where codes should go: your email, or SMS to your phone.
  3. 3For SMS you need a verified phone number on your account first.
  4. 4Save. Every other device you were signed in on is signed out, which is deliberate.
Code length
6 digits
Time to use it
10 minutes from when you log in
Wrong codes
10 tries a minute, then wait a moment
Didn't arrive?
Tap Resend — up to 3 times a minute

Changing your password

  1. 1Settings, then Login & security.
  2. 2Type your current password, then your new one (8 characters or more).
  3. 3Save. Every other device is signed out, so you may need to log in again on your phone or laptop.

How long you stay signed in

A normal login lasts 30 days on that device. Changing your password, resetting it, or switching two-factor login on or off ends every other session immediately — that is the fastest way to kick out anyone you think has got into your account.

Deleting your account

  1. 1Settings, then scroll to Delete account.
  2. 2Type DELETE in the box and enter your password to confirm.
  3. 3Your profile, posts and messages are removed permanently.
There is no undo and no temporary deactivation. If you only want a break, log out instead. Before deleting, you can use Download my data in Settings to keep a copy of your information.
