Where notifications live
Notifications is in the main menu on a computer and in the bottom bar on a phone, where it is labelled Alerts. A red number on it means you have something unread. The page lists everything newest first, and you can switch between All and Unread.
- 1Open Notifications from the menu (Alerts at the bottom of the screen on a phone).
- 2Tap any notification to open the thing it is about — the post, the message, the profile.
- 3Tapping it also marks it as read. Mark all read clears the lot in one go.
What you get notified about
- New messages
- When someone sends you a direct message. Several messages in a row from the same person are collapsed into one notification.
- New followers
- When someone follows you, or asks to follow you if your account is private.
- Mentions
- When someone writes @your-username in a post or a comment.
- Comments
- When someone replies to one of your posts.
- Reactions
- When someone likes one of your posts.
- Friend requests
- Requests you receive, and acceptances of requests you sent.
- Photo tags
- When someone tags you in a photo.
- Points
- Points you earn, including referral bonuses.
- Ad decisions
- When your ad account or one of your ads is approved or rejected. These always come through.
Turn notifications off
- 1Go to Settings.
- 2Find the Notifications section.
- 3Switch off anything you do not want. Each one saves on its own — there is no Save button.
Decisions on your own ad account always reach you, whatever your settings say — you need to know whether your ad was approved.
